METS : FA 101

With the obvious need for a closer the Mets might be using an interesting method in approaching a few big ticket closers...

Acc. to ESPN's Buster Olney he says "It is not known exactly what the Mets intend to offer to the top-flight closers, but let’s say they proposed a three-year, $36 million deal to Francisco Rodriguez; a three-year, $30 million offer to Brian Fuentes; and a two-year, $18 million offer to Kerry Wood. And then they could tell all three that the first to bite gets the contract. The Cardinals, Brewers, Indians and other teams are looking for closers, but probably won’t spend at the same level as the Mets."

Is this a good method?

Should teams use this method??

all of those offers sound pretty fair to me. abie, whom would you prefer? I would take k-rod, then wood, then fuentes.
There's no way another team offers more money to these guys. Maybe the Cards and Brewers will offer similar contracts but I can see the Indians trying to trade for huston street or signing trevor hoffman.
The Cards get Isringhousen off the books and have money to spend.
The Brewers get Gagne's 10 mill off the books to spend on a "real" closer and they also have a team ready to compete so a closer could help. Although they may try to get some starting pitching to replace Sabathia and Sheets.
It's a Buyers Market and the Mets have all the leverage. I wouldn't be surprised to see them leave Vegas with one of these guys. The only thing is that you hope Omar doesn't pull another Pedro Martinez deal and give someone like Wood or Fuentes 4 years. That would be rediculous.

I think that the Mets have the most money out of all the teams you mentioned.. and i also believe that the price tag that Boras is asking for is much higher than any team is going to offer..

I think that K-rod will end up signing with the Mets for either 3/4 years at 13 mil a year...the deciding factor for the 3 or 4 years will be if a team says 3 yrs 36 mil and the mets say ok 4 yrs and 52 mil or something like that..similar to how they signed Luis Castillo...
I agree with you about Wood over Fuentes..however with Wood i prob would only offer him a 2 yr deal with a 3rd yr vesting option..dependent on how many IP he has during the last year of the contract..

I also see the Mets making the move for Houston Street..there was a report a week ago that they offered Heilman for him and the Rockies said they also wanted Feliciano and Omar said no..so i think that during the meetings this will heat up again and i think that the mets will throw in a minor leaguer to get it done...

ps the Rockies are in love with Jonatahn Neise..so much so they were in talks about Holliday for him and a couple of other prospects.. so there are deals to be done..be patient..

one more guy i am skeptical of is Juan Cruz i think that if they cant pull off the Street deal that they will pursue him..

but i think best case scenario is Street and Krod and signing one or even two of Burnett, Lowe, Marquis, Garland, Oli Perez, Sheets (incentive deal)...

also look for them to go after Ibanez for left field at a reasonable price..8 mil..

there are alot of reports that the mets are in talks with teams to trade castillo for another bad contract..eg Eric Byrnes, Jose Castillo etc...and then sign Orlando Hudson..however i think that omar is gonna solidify the bullpen before he looks into anything else...

his checklist is prob.
1)get a closer
2)trade heilman/get a setup man
3)get a starter or two
4)upgrade LF/2nd base/catcher

i am not sold on trading castillo yet..if they can trade him and get hudson then do it...but i dont want to see anderson hernandez at second base next yr...

the report on Street is that the mets offered heilman and feliciano for him and when the rockies called back to accept the deal omar changed his mind..

also dont be surprised to see Trevor Hoffman or Chad Cordero in the pen possibly as a setup man...

also..the approach that alot of teams that are looking for a closer is changing...teams are backing off of k-rod and hoping the mets sign him quickly so that the asking price on Fuentes and Wood drops...
