SAM I AMS TEN MOST OVERRATED STARS TO PLAY IN NEW YORK IN THE PAST DECADE

Once again inspired by Abie, I have made a post which lists in my opinion The top 10 most over rated sports stars to ever play in NY In the last decade. This includes all major sports.

The most over rated stars ever to play in new york in no particular order.

1, Derek Jeter: Consistently rated by the stats guys as the worst fielding shortstop in MLB. Very good with a bat but is he worth a 10 year $189 million contract. I didn’t think so either. Derek Jeter What's the deal with Steinbrenner asking Jeter, in that Visa commercial, how he can afford his nights on the town? George, you pay the man. Or, we should say, overpay ($19 million a year through 2010). Jeter's good. Very good. Probable Hall of Famer. But his performance has declined every year since 1999, and he's only the fourth-best shortstop in the AL. Defensively? Adequate, at best, Dont get me wrong I love this guy. But going on numbers alone to the money he makes he is very overrated. But any real yanky fan knows what value he meant to the championship teams. and even every now and then he comes up big.

2, Jaromir Jagr: Jagr is talented but he’s not that talented. Playing with Super Mario in Pittsburgh made people believe that Jaromir was much better than he actually was. After a couple of seasons in Washington people have started to see the real Jagr who just happens to be a newer version of Rosie Ruzicka. Now with the Rangers I think he as overrated as ever. Hes just not what people say he is.

3, Alan houston. As far as I can remember Houston never played a lick of defense in his career. He is vastly overrated And besides that running one hander against Miami in the playoffs he was just soooo un clutch.

4, Chad Pennington of the New York Jets.all I heard was how great this guy is, granted he came back from his surgery but he was average before and average after. He has not anything in his tenure to warrant superstar status in my eyes. His biggest accomplishment was playing with Randy Moss in college. He is an average quarterback bottom line. He makes a living on dump passes and relies on blocking to beef up his numbers. He did have a couple of decent years but thats just because curtis martin was doing his job. chad is just average.

5 , Stephon Marbury the most over-rated player in the NBA
Not only is he problematic, but if we look through his career, every time he departs a team, the team does fantastic. Remember his days in New Jersey Nets? The Nets were the worse team in the NBA, he gets traded for Jason Kidd, and then what happens to the Nets? They go to the NBA Finals twice! He goes to Phoenix and they are mediocre, they bring in Steve Nash, an elite basketball team. Now Marbury goes to New York and look at what happens.... How does Marbury help your franchise???

6, Jeremy Shockey. I'm not saying that Jeremy Shockey isn't a good football player. I'm saying that I think people like to put Jeremy Shockey in the same category as Tony Gonzalez and Antonio Gates. Shockey has one 70 catch season, which was his rookie year. He has never had 1,000 yard season. He hasn't even had a 900 yard season. The most touchdown catches he has had in a season is 7. His 24 touchdowns in 69 games do not scream elite status. To put it in perspective, Gates has 34 touchdowns in 61 games. He has a 1,000 yard plus season, and two 900 yards plus seasons. Gonzalez has 6 such seasons, including the last 4 seasons. I think the temptation is to lump these three players into the same category as superstar tight ends. I think it is clear that while Shockey is a very good tight end, Gates and Gonzalez are in a class by themselves.

7 , Jose Reyes is overrated, and isnt even the best SS in his division (Hanley Ramirez and Rollins are better. It sickens me to hear mets fans tell me how good this guy is. All I see in this guy is potential. Reyes has yet to put up a really big monster year. and hes just too inconsistent. He doese show flashes of greatness but in spurts. When reyes has no plate diciplan he looks so lost and in over his head . if you just throw him a curveball he swings from his heals. Im not saying reyes is a bad player im just saying hes not what everybody says he is. What ever happened to his 25 Hr potential . Bottom line is Hanley Is far Superior.

8 , Kenyon Martin is overrated. Combine that with his huge contract, and I'd guess he'll be headed to the Knicks sooner or later. When Kmart played for the Nets He was a product of jason kidds greatness. Hell, if I was on that team i would be great. (miki moore) Kenyon is just a hot headed player who cant stay healthy . and the only reason people know who he is .is because he played with the hall of famer Kidd.

9 , Tom Glavine, his career the last few years are all based off of reputation, he gets the benfit of the doubt on borderline pitches more frequently than just about any pitcher. Glavin was never good as a part of the mets no matter what any mets fan says. The time they needed him most. he came up smaller than Armando Benitez in a big spot.

10 , Eli Manning overrated in my opinion and here is why.

1. He was the number one overall pick, and before he can even prove himself worth the pick, he refused to play for the team that picked him (the team that became one of the most talented team in the NFL)

2. Statistic-wise, Manning played 4 seasons in the NFL and has an average passer-rating of 73.4 (never went over 77 for a season). Complete just over 55 percent of his passes, TD - INT ratio is 13.3. He's yet to prove that he can "lead" the team, if it wasn't for the Giants defense this year, they probably wouldn't have made the playoffs

Eli Manning is a dumb Quarterback. He is getting better, but he certainly is not a franchise QB. Without Burress, he would be nothing. The D is great, Jacobs is alright (surprised me), but Manning is no answer at all, unless you're looking for Peyton.

The reason im saying this now is because Eli just came off his best performance as a giant which happened to come in the playoffs. If it werent for a great running attack eli would have been a dead man. Its funny how when Eli decides to go the Chad pennington Route by throwing a ton of dump off passes (nothing more than 6 yards) He has success. Bottom line is if it werent for the blocking he would have had a mediocre game. Oh and one more thing. GET THAT DUMB LOOK OFF YOUR FACE DAMNIT.

Honorable mentions

Drew Henson: (I had too)

Overrated in two sports. He was so highly touted that he pushed Tom Brady into a back-up role in football at Michigan and was given a 6-year $17 million contract by the Yankees to play 3rd base. Now I think most people realize by now that Tom Brady was actually a much better QB than Henson(sarcasm)

I know its not counted cause he never actually played in NY but still.....

Joe Torre ( not a player so I couldent put him on the actuall list.)

is a supremely overrated manager. all the additional credit he gets for all the World Series titles that the Yankees won makes me sick.
The fact is that Joe Torre was blessed with supremely talented teams for all twelve years he was with the Yankees. All twelve of those teams were the best team on paper heading into the season, and all twelve would have been expected to go far into the playoffs, no matter who was managing. (even me)
Joe Torre lived up to what we would have expected from any manager under those circumstances. He did an okay job. In the first five years (with no small amount of luck - Jeffrey Mayer, anyone?), he won four World Series, but in the last seven years he didn’t win any.
Moreover, any sort of close examination of Torre’s in-game managing calls reveals that he was a less than stellar tactician, extremely rigid in his use of the bullpen and the bench, abused his star releivers to the verge of ruining careers, and prone to irrationally overplaying favorites Look, I’m not trying to say that Torre was a terrible manager by any stretch of the imagination. he was good at PR, and he also brought a sense of dignity to the team and was popular with his players and the fans. And those are all good things.
But what it boils down is, are Joe Torre’s managerial skills really worth between $15 to $20 I mean how many extra wins a year was Torre worth to the Yankees? 1? Maybe 2 at most? How many wins did he cost by playing Miguel Cairo at first base?

Pavano? I didnt know if i could put him on the list. All he was was a really bad signing (avi said it at the time.)His walk to strikeout ratio before the yanks signed was allarming. And he was a career .500 pitcher before the yanx signed him . (Ill compile a list of the top ten worst contracts ever a little later Guess who tops that list.... you got it our good buddy carl....)

Mike hampton every body thinks that hampton was so great in the mets 2000 world series year. but in reality he walked the ballpark and only had 15 wins. all i got to say is OVER RATED

jeromy burnitz (Where do I begin?)

robbie alomar ..... SUCKS

I would like to thank Max S, for helping me compile this list.

WOW I AM THE FIRST COMMENT...NNICEE

ANYWAY I AGREE WITH THE LIST EXCEPT FOR ONE MAN.

JEREMY SHOCKEY.

HE IS AN UNBELIEVABLE AND TALENTED PLAYER. HE BLOCKS SO WELL HE MAKES GREAT PLAYS HE GETS THE TEAM EXCITED HE'S JUST A GREAT PLAYER.

THE PROBLEM IS THAT ELI MANNING DOESNT USE HIM ENOUGH. IF YOU LOOK AT THE COWBOYS FOR EXAMPLE THEY USE JASON WITTEN SO OFTEN HE IS ALMOST ANOTHER WIDE RECIEVER AND IF THEY PAY TOO MUCH ATTENTION TO HIM THEN T.O. OS LEFT OPEN SO THATS WHY THE COWBOYS WERE SO SUCCESSFUL THIS SEASON. IF ELI MANNING WOULD USE THE WEAPON HE HAS HE WOULDNT BE ON THIS LIST AT ALL BECAUSE HIS NUMBERS WOULD SKY ROCKET.

WHEN SHOCKEY WENT DOWN THIS SEASON I WAS PISSED BUT IN A WAY HAPPY BECAUSE IF THE GIANTS DO LOSE IN THE PLAYOFFS IT WOULD BE BECAUSE OF THE LACK OF THREAT THAT THEY COULD HAVE HAD WITH SHOCKEY ON THE FIELD.

WHY WAS I HAPPY?

BECAUSE ELI MANNING HAD SHOCKEY ON THE FIELD FOR MORE THEN HALF THE SEASON AND BARELY USED HIM. I WANNA SEE THIS IDIOT MAKE A FOOL OF HIMSELF AND NOT HAVE ANYONE TO THROW TO NOW WHEN HE NEEDS IT.

THIS MAY NOT MAKE SENSE ABOUT WHY I AM HAPPY BUT IM A BIT FRUSTRATED WITH MANNING THESE DAYS THATS ALL.

BUT YAH ANYWAY BACK TO THE MAIN POINT I DONT THINK SHOCKEY SHOULD BE ON THIS LIST AT ALL. PUT HIM ON A TEAM WHO WILL USE HIS TALENT AND HE WILL BE ALL YOU WILL HEAR ABOUT ON SPORTSCENTER WEEK AFTER WEEK.

i agree with most of them...

reyes i agree that if people thought that he would peak at 21 then they were wrong and he is overrated in that sense...however if the mets didnt collapse and he didnt slump in september i dont see him on this list...

i love that allan houston and shockey are on this list..

and ralph dont say hes a good blocker....yay... so be an offensive lineman...shockey's season high was in his rookie year with 74 catches and since then he hasnt had a season with more then 65 catches...and gonzalez has had a 102 reception season and this year his 11th season he had 99 catches and 1172 yards cmon...but you will always see him spike the ball everytime he makes his one "big" catch every year...

maxsutton said...

sam thank you for the shout out.
Ralph i used to think like you regarding your shockey point.
But think about it Eli would like shockeys numbers to go up bec that would mean his own go up as well. sO IF HE REALLY COULD throw to him he would. Whether its that he doesnt run the correct routes or they cover him really well he doesnt do it. Think about it why wouldnt they use him more if it would help them win.

Otherwise the list is very good i just hope when this list is made next year Reyes is off of it.

we have all heard about the article about johan to the mets for mulvey gurera gomez and humber...would u include f-mart in the deal...

personally i like the deal the way it is leave f-mart out..i believe in him more than gomez...and this is a better deal then any other team is offering right now...

hughes malky and tabata vs gomez mulvey gurera and humber....and down the stretch they come...

maxsutton said...

The mets should do what ever it takes to get him. If it means giving up F mart you do it. They shouldnt be playing games with this
They should put it all out on the table and give the juiciest offer possible.
If you feel Johan can really help bring a ring ( which i do) then you do it ( they are all prospects.) All this is especially true for the mets bec they are in a weak NL. Once you get to the world series you never know.

SAM I AM said...

abie iknow your not going to want to hear it. but frankly i dont think i know that the yankee package kicks abbo.only because of phil hughes. there arent many people that can say that they were baseball americas top pitching prospect. oh and also the mets do tend to overrate there prospects ALL THE TIME.

maxsutton said...

unfortunately i totally agree with sam. and after they trade milledge for the crap they received it just further proves sammys point.
But i still think they win their division this year.

abie said...

that is true that the mets tend to over rate their players...i think that this time its different u have omar and i personally have watched these guys whether that be in spring training or at shea..i know i am not a scout..

but my take on it is that let gomez go becuz i dont see what others r going crazy for...i like his speed and his glove but the fact that they think if he bulks up he will be carlos lee astonishes me

i like pelfrey i like his stuff i think they rushed him and the only reason that mets fans think the mets took their time with him is that we have heard about him since they drafted him...

just look at f-mart he was 17 when i heard how awesome he is and now hes only 19 so relax...btw i think he is the real deal he has such a sweet swing and can wait back on the ball with the best of them..the only problem is finding a position for him...he can play outfield however he must learn rf or lf as he has only played cf in the minors

as for humber his ceiling is blanton...

one name i also like is willie collazo he has a daren oliver like delivery and has good breaking stuff including a slider...and his fastball is in the low 90's...he is starting in winter league and is doing well...

if the mets could get this deal done that would be great...i would like to keep f-mart, pelfrey and heilman only becuz i dont want to trade at low value and see him start and succeed somewhere else...but if they are all in the al and in 5 years they will all be free agents then throw heilman in as well..

THIS JUST IN!!!!

THE METS HAVE MONEY!!!

Fred Wilpon said he will sign sanatana and that there is no problem for them to throw mopney at him...

“If Minaya swings the trade, as I wrote about today, Wilpon is confident he’ll get Santana signed. In the Mets’ camp, there is a belief that the price for Santana won’t be quite as high as advertised. Santana might ask for a six-year, $150 million extension, but there’s a belief teams could negotiate down from there.”

interesting...i think that johan will be traded during the congressional hearings so it covers them up....what do u think?...with all of the things that players have done on other events this year y not?...arod opts out on w.s arod signs on mitchell report..lowell signs on arod mvp day...etc....

first of all...the money a player makes does not make his stats.
second of all...A player's monetary value is that which someone is willing to pay him.

I am very upset that derek jeter is on this list. not only is he top 5 at his position in all of baseball, but his leadership abilities are invaluable to the yanks especially these days during the second coming of the bronx zoo. he is the rock, glue and face of the greatest franchise in sports history. I believe this would qualify him for the contract he signed.

abie said...

mike u are way off he is the #1 overrated player ever!

people make him to be one of the best players in baseball when he doesnt crack the top 30

IM THE LAST COMMENT B4 SHABBAT!!!

RALPH said...

OK THE THING IS MAX WITH SHOCKEY IS THAT YOU SEE IT SO MANY TIMES WHERE HE IS OPEN AND DOESNT GET THE PASS BESIDES IF THEY USED HIM AND MADE ROUTES FOR HIM EVEN A SIMPLE CUT ACCROSS THE MIDDLE ROUTE HE HAS THE POWER TO PUSH FOR MORE YARDS AND HE CAN HOLD ON TO THE BALL HE IS JUST NOT USED.

ASIDE FROM THE FACT THAT ABIE YOU ARE DEAD WRONG HE IS VERY MUCH A BLOCKER AND HE IT IS ALWAYS OVERLOOKED. HE IS A BIG MAN.

OH AND BTW ABIE DONT EVER USE CAPS AGAIN.

AND I AM THE LAST COMMENT BEFORE SHABBAT SO YAH

Michael, you are so wrong about the money thing. Money=value. there is no other way to gage it.
the only other thing you can say is stats .and if you say that then he still is overrated. He dosent crack the top 20 in offensive production since 99 which was by far his best season to date. He is a hit machine and he is a hall of famer. and yes he IS MY FAV GUY ON THE TEAM. i rather nobody else in the game up with the season on the line. but still he isnt what every body makes him out to be. oh one more thing . on his defense, Hes just no good on the ground ball up the middle. and it hurts the team at least once every 5 games. so HE IS OVER RATED
