THE START OF REDEMPTION

I don't mean to bring back some unpleasant memories for Yankee fans, But for the sake of this post, bare with me.

The year is 2004 and the most successful franchise in sports history has a commanding 3 games to none lead on the best of seven series in the league championship series. Versus the hated BOSTON Red Sox. No team has ever come back from such a deficit. Its just unheard of. With the curse of the Bambino fully intact and chants of 1918 ringing through the streets of New York Nobody could ever imagine the yankees could somehow squander such a lead. Hell, even the Red Sox Were thinking of there golf strokes.
Well since that day the yankees have lost 14 out of there last 19 post season games.(Isn't that Crazy?)and the red sox have won two world series championships. The Yankees organization have fallen on hard times in the past few years. Hopefully the youth movement that the yankees have decided to incorporate pays off. (I STILL DONT KNOW WHY JOHAN ISNT ON THE TEAM.)
In the past few years Boston has been on top of the sports world. The scandalous Patriots WERE simply untouchable . The Red Sox under Theo's brilliant Baseball mind have stopped on a dime and became a savvy baseball minded franchise and have taken two titles as well. To round it off The Celtics had one of the most monstrous off-seasons you could possibly dream of by acquiring Kevin Garnet and Ray Allen.

Most recently the New York Giants have pulled off the most stunning upset in NFL history
by shocking the New England Patriots in super bowl XLII.

I Know New York is nowhere near where it needs to be at the top of professional sports. The Jets and Knicks are at the bottom of the barrel. The Yankees haven't escaped the first round in what feels like a century and the Mets just came off the biggest collapse known to man, but things are looking good for both the Yanx and the Mets. Th is a lot to be excited about on the Yankee front with Joba, IPK and Phil in the fold. Being the optimistic fan that I am, I am banking on the fact that at least two out of the BIG THREE will contribute in a big way. The mets just guaranteed themselves a spot in the NLCS with the acquisition of Johan and have two promising young hurlers in Maine and Perez.
The Knicks and the Jets are just awful but hopefully a miracle happens.
The rivalry between NY & BOSTON is something special,
From The Yankees/Red Sox (bambino) ,
Mets /Red Sox(86) ,
JETS/PATS (spygate scandal)
GIANTS /PATS (08) .
the list goes on and on. Theirs probably something in the NHL and in the NBA that i haven't thought about or remembered off the top of my head..
As a fan I'm glad to be right in middle of it.

Dare i say the fortunes of NY have turned for the better thanks to the G-MEN.
I SURE HOPE SO

Sam I hate to put a negative post after that. But in all reality I'm worried as a Yankee fan.
Our rotation is not that awesome.
Wang is great, and Pettite should be OK again, but The rest is all Question marks.
Sure, Joba looked great last year, but look at what King Felix did last year for the mariners- nothing. And Joba is no Felix Hernandez.

Hughes is interesting. I think he'll be a very good major league pitcher, but frankly I was dissapointed with what I saw last year.
The scouting reports on him were glowing, and I expected to see Jake peavy.
Instead I saw another Moose. I don't know how truly dominant this kid can be. Even when he strikes guys out, I wonder why they swung and missed on a 92 MPH fastball.

I am not a Kennedy fan at all. He is by no means a lock for 15 wins.
And I don't even want to talk about mussina.

So I really don't get it when you say the Yanks are looking good.

I'll admit that I am really bitter that we didn't get Johan.

By the way sam I win the bet.
Hughes did not throw a 97 MPH fastball last year in the bigs.

also you spelled "redemption" wrong

WHY THE HECK CAN"T WE GET BERDARD EITHER!!!!!
FIRE BRIAN!!!!

first off sammy sutton, your yankee team has not improved since last year except that everyone on the team is one year older and just a bit richer. Posada will not put up the career numbers he had last season and pettitte will not be the same either (and i dont think joba will be the same as he was last season, ESPECIALLY if he is a starter! new manager i think we should also factor that in? i think we should also facotor in the toronto blue jays as long as they have their healthy team they are a threat, Yankee fans dont have a clear steer into october by no means my friend!

out of subject but here is johans contract:

later signed 6-year EXTENSION worth $137.5M thru 2013 season that supersedes previous deal on 2/2/08- + he receives salaries of $19M in 2008, $20M in 2009, $21M in 2010, $22.5M in 2011, $24M in 2012 and $25.5M in 2013- + the deal includes a team option for 2014 worth $25M or a $5.5M buyout- + the option becomes a player option with 215IP in 2013 or an average of 210IP over the last two or three years- + for the option to become a player option, he must be on the active roster in September 2013- + the option can also become a player option if he wins one Cy Young award while finishing in the top three in another year, or if he finishes in the top three in three years- + part of his compensation is deferred- + he receives a complete NO-TRADE clause- + bonuses he has earned

For 2008:

Becket > Wang - Halladay > Wang

Schilling =Pettite-Burnett> Pettite

Matuszaka = Joba - Mcgowen = Joba

Bucholtz = Hughes - Marcum < Hughes

Lester > Kennedy - Litsch < Kennedy

Before you argue look up mcgowen and marcum's numbers.

Only for THIS year- hughes kennedy and joba will definitely be better in future

Unknown said...

and don't look now but the angels have competition for the West.

Berdard
King Felix
Carlos Silva
Miguel Bautista
Washburn

Brandon Morrow is awesome ( their Joba ) seting up Putz.

If the starters pitch to their potential watch out.

I am a very unhappy yankee fan today. I think it's because i'm listening to the giants ticker-tape parade & I'm jealous

SploggerDon said...

although the mets still have the burden of their september collapse you have to understand how santana helps them, so if u wanna try and refute what i said about 3 comments ago read my blog before you talk, and sam can i hear what u have to say about the yanks and theur struggles? and dont underestimate the sox, i think your forgetting how good they REALLY were

Unknown said...

ABIE IS HE TALKING TO ME OR YOU?

SploggerDon said...

talking to sam, i dont klnow u guys

SAM I AM said...

wow, where do i begin????

abie said...

idk about u guys but i get butterflies everytime i think about johan in a mets uniform...

cant wait for opening day at shea...

ps the mets will announce today who will be the last performer at shea ..rumor has it that it will be billy joel...

personally i would like to hear "taking care of business" playing after they win the world series

SploggerDon said...

i am getting those butterflies also! cnt wait for tomoro,

abie said...

jeremy shockey was not at the parade..and heis name is not on the championship shirt

also:

Amani Toomer broke his hand in the fourth quarter of Super Bowl XLII, possibly on a low throw that he had to come back for.

Plaxico Burress’ mysterious knee injury happened when he slipped in the shower in his hotel room

RALPH said...

HI GUYS....

MAX DONT YOU DARE USE CAPS LIKE THAT FOR A FULL SENTENCE AGAIN ON THIS BLOG!

abie said...

4 hours to johan

maxsutton said...

I am very excited about this johan press conferance coming up. This is my best sports week ever.
Ralph i dont care what you say but as good as shockey is i think the giants should trade him for a draft pick. Sometimes Chemistry is the most important thing and shockey and manning is just not that.
And to all yankee fans Johan not going to the red sox is not a victory. The yankees needed him more than the red sox did. In reality the red sox fans are the happy ones that the yanx didnt get him. Theo has Becket. Wang is great but he already showed us that he is no becket. ( atleast not yet)
I know we say this everyday ten times but how bad of a GM can cashman be. The mets really stole johan. It just doesnt make sense.
Im thinking maybe the yanx did what the mets did a couple of years ago with Arod. The offers were maybe all a show. so the fans think they are in it. Maybe 218 million dollars a year is the limit.
Otherwise why the hell is Johan on the Mets. ( no complaints but i just dont get it)

SAM I AM said...

max your alive??

Sam also used the word "there" when he should have used "their".....

Year after Year the Yanks are built for the long haul. They are well equipped with a starting rotation that gives them a better than average chance to win every day. The lineup is deep that allows for certain players to get hot and others to get cold and still be able to win games daily. The bullpen is full of arms, maybe not the best shut down arms in the league, but definitely plenty of average arms to last the year.

The problem is that when we need one big player to come up huge in the playoffs, we only have A-Rod that could be pitched around and EVEN HE has not dominated the playoffs yet.

The problem with the rotation AS EVIDENCE TO LAST SEASON, is that we don't have a dominant #1 starter even though I said before the playoffs started that Pettitte should have been starting games 1 and 4 instead of Wang.

Bottom Line, We are a 95 win team with a 50/50 chance to win in the playoffs. The fact that there are tons of days off doesn't help either.

Unknown said...

mike we're not even a 95 win team. We have some pretty tough competition in the indians, tigers, mariners, angels, blue jays, and. of course, those F'n Red Sox

I think we're a 90 win team at best. sorry.

abie said...

welcome to samiam english class...

SAM I AM said...

guys if you want i will take up an english course in my local community college

MSR said...

Max, do you at least agree that we are built for the long season and not for the playoffs?

Unknown said...

not sure what you mean by that.
We need a true, shut-down ace to win in the postseason.
Wang should be our #2. Joba has that potential, but he might not even start.
I don't think Hughes is that lights-out king of a guy.

MSR said...

In the regular season, it is probably better to have 5 above average starters than 1 or 2 shut down and 3 or 4 average starters.

In a short playoff system, it is better to have Beckett/Schilling , (Sabathia/Carmona) , Peavy/Young

All we have is a bunch of #2's and 3's that cannot be counted on to hold opponents to 2 runs or less in a playoff game.

Absolutely, Abie, the mets WILL have more wins than the Yanks, playing in the Minor, um, I mean the National League

my top ten teams for 2008:

1) Tigers
Sick starting trio of verlander, bonderman, and dontrelle; best lineup in the game

2) Angels
deep rotation, torii hunter helps alot, although overrated

3)Indians
C.c & Fausto, Hafner will return

4)Red Sox
Overrated in my eyes

5)Mets
collection of filth will be good

6)Diamondbacks
Haren-webb, great young offense

7)Mariners
Berdard and a good felix puts them over the top

8)Yankees
Santana would have put us #1

T9)Cubs
Great offense, I like Rich hill

T9)Phillies
Lidge allows dominant Myers to enter rotation

a couple of points:
I hate the Rockies, they are the most overrated team in baseball

Give the Padres a great right-handed bat, and if Prioir is healthy- and they would win the West

abie said...

how can there be 3 teams better then the red sox? that amazes me...even though they didnt gain anyone and lost eric gagne....this team will be at least better then the indians

abie said...

the sanatana press conference through the eyes of a phily writer:

“In the realm of the nauseating, this was even worse than Eli Manning and the fellas parading the Lombardi Trophy through the Canyon of Heroes…The PR guy attempted to shut down the last shutterbugs and begin the news conference by announcing, ‘Johan, your public awaits.’ At which point, I gagged on some vomit…And, in that spirit, Santana raised his hands at one point and showed off all the World Series rings he won in Minnesota. Oh, wait.”

abie said...

mike just so you know most of my posts are typed during my classes...

GO MU

Unknown said...

ok abie maybe they are over the indians. Maybe.
but the indians have c.c and carmona, and hard throwing top-prospect miller
joining the rotation.
cliff lee, Paul Byrd, & westbrook should do ok. in th 4 & 5 spots.

Grady Sizemore is young & getting even better, maybe even top 5 Of in the bigs.

Most red sox are all getting older,
and lowell won't repeat.

The only reason the Sox may be better is because of papelbon.

Call it a tie

hey yankee fans how about i share some good news with you ?

Tony Massarotti, of the Boston Herald, reports Boston Red Sox SP Curt Schilling (shoulder) may miss the entire 2008 season because of a significant shoulder injury. The injury is not exactly known, but it is believed the injury is to the rotator cuff or the labrum and may require surgery. Also, it is not known if the injury has lingered from last season or the injury occurred after his first injury healed. The Red Sox have inquired about voiding his one-year contract, but it is not known how far they have taken the idea. The threat of voiding his contract has created a conflict between Schilling and the team.

abie said...

could there be light at the end of the tunnel for the yanks? and does this mean colon to the red sox? or will they rely on their kids

SAM I AM said...

This definatley doese sound like great news , but how do we know if schilling isnt up to his old tricks??faking an injury and then when he pitches great getting praised how he pitches through pain.. to be honest i hope this story is true. this guy is a low life
