Number Blunder

As the 2001 world series was coming to an end, and the final home game the Yankee's would play that season was taking place and was nearing its final outs, Although the story lines were running wild through New York, from 9/11 all the way to Byung-Hyun Kim giving up the most unlikely home runs imaginable. What may you ask were the 55 thousand plus people in the stands screaming on the top of their lungs may you ask? Non other than the name of a true Yankee legend. Somebody who took it personal every time he made an out and he would beet up on himself until his next at bat. Somebody who had the heart of a lion and what George steinbrenner labeled him as a "Warrior". I am talking about non other than My Favorite player of all time, Paul O'Neill.

There were many superstars in New york at the time .Derek Jeter's Name is at the top of the list then you had Bernie Williams and even on the other side of town you had Mike Piazza. Paul always went under the radar being the modest classy sports star that he was. Paul had a knack of coming up big whenever you needed him . He was the Guy You wanted at the plate because you knew he was going to put the ball in play and work a great at bat. O'Neill's numbers don't jump off the page by any stretch of the imagination http://www.baseball-reference.com/o/o although you could count on 100 RBIs and 35 doubles with 20-25 Hrs. Basically what I'm trying to say is Paul O'Neill left a bigger impact on this team then people lead to believe.

Now lets fast forward to today's date. Spring training is finally here. Since the close of the 01 season NOBODY has worn O'Neill's #21 . It was always talk amongst Yankee fans that the Number was unofficially retired. Nobody dared to wear it. (Maybe Torre had something to do with this) But Now all of the sudden the Yankees give the Number to Morgan Ensberg??? who isn't even a lock to make the team. I mean Come on, at least give it to one of the BIG 3.

I know I'm probably in the minority of people who has a problem with this but I am just taken back at this shocking turn of events in the Yankees Dynasty.

heres my question for all of you ...

what number is on the unretired list for the new york jets...and who is it?

hint: he was paralyzed on a play against the kc cheifs on nov 29th 1992.

please try not to look it up...

this number has never been worn by any jet since this incident in 92'

sam i agree with you 100% and i thought that the post was very moving and brought very good points to y noone should wear his #

its funny becuz keith hernandez's # has been said that it should be retired since he changed the mets franchise and lead them to a ws in 86...he said when he sees guys like david newhan wearing #17 it gives him a sick feeling

dyk the Twins went 105-47 when Santana started over the past five years and only 335-323 when he didn’t

Tremendous

Dennis Byrd poor guy, and good call i never noticed that! and sam there wasnt a person in the would that didnt give respect to paul! you are 100% right

abie said...

his number was 90 if u didnt know and no jet has worn it since and the staff in charge says they always avoid using the # and have not made one since

For a pitcher, I though Scott Proctor was guts and balls and put it all out there every pitch. He stuck up for his teammates--never afraid to knock down a batter or two. Even though he had some rocky outings, I always liked him best of the middle relievers.

y is pedro martinez sticking his nose in the steroid era he said "I dominated that era and I did it clean," "I can stand by my numbers and I can be proud of them."

"I have a small frame and when I hurt all I could do was take a couple of Aleve or Advil, a cup of coffee and a little mango and an egg -- and let it go!"

"I wish that they would check every day. That's how bad I want the game to be clean,"
"I would rather go home (than) taint the game."

"It's going to be all dictated by my health,"
"If I'm healthy, I still have a couple years left. ... If I don't finish as a Met, I think it's going to be a long haul to find
another team or whatever."

and on jimmy rollins predictions...."We have to make Jimmy swallow his tongue,"

I AGREE WITH YOU SAM EXCELLENT POINT AND I THINK YOU SHOULD POST UP THE ADDRESS TO THE YANKEES AND WE SHOULD ALL SEND IN TO THE YANKEES HOW MAD AND DISTURBED WE ARE ABOUT THIS.

just now on wfan...sweeney murti was on evan & joe's show and he said that it was an awkward thing that they gave oneil's #21 to ensberg but that the yankees staff said that with all the retired nubers (15 i believe) and the 72 players n uniform and the 12 coaches that get numbers...they had to use all the numbers they could to avoid many triple digits as they could...

one point they brought up was that many yankee players have their number retired by the team that are not in the hall of fame..one of those is oneil...oneil will prob never make it into the hall of fame...but his number can still be retired by the team...

ensberg may never make the team so this isnt a problem until he wears that jersey in yankee stadium

abie said...

joe and evan went on to discuss that the yankee standard for retiring numbers is very low..since they have alot of people whose #'s are retired that are not hall of fame players so oneil's # should be retired...

they went further to say that in the torre era whose # will be retired...TORRE #6 JETER #2 BERNIE #51 MARIANO (a 2nd ,jackie robinson) #42, ONIEL #21...they fought over posada...

also the mets standard is so high since there are only 2 retired numbers and only one players number...so should they retire piazza #31 or keith's #17...they said no...since seaver was a great and he is the only one...so piazza 7 1/2 years here isnt enough...

what do you think?

SploggerDon said...

abie, 3 years as a met we can condier him GREAT i dont think the mets need to retire his nu,ber, although if he were a yankee on the oher hand his number would most definatly be retired

running threw a few websites...i came across shutuptimmccarver.com

there they say his quote of the year is:
" If you leadoff and you play everyday, you're guaranteed to bat with the bases empty at least 162 times". July 8th 2006.

wow...thanks Tim

for some reason i feel the need to compare the 2 gms in ny based on what they have done this past offseason...

lets look at omar first...

he gets the best pitcher in baseball while still holding on to 2 of his best prospect sin pelfrey and f-mart...he signs the best 2nd baseman on the market in luis castillo...
he signs saenz who is a good bench player from the right side to spell marlon who is the lefty bench hitter...this is a dramatic plus from entering last year with julio franco...remember him...he also signs brady clark who hits lefties well and is a good defensive outfielder...
also signs tony aramas jr who is a low risk high reward guy...

and while trading lastings milledge i began to think if we're trading milledge lets get pitching...he solved that with johan...so this deal seems more sensible now that most "experts" are calling church a sleeper...and schneider is a great defensive catcher..something the mets havent had in over 10 years...
he also resigned ben johnson, jose valentin, easley, marlon anderson and ramon castro and call it a trade for OF angel pagan ...so he has added depth to this already deep bench
also he picked up the option for moises alou
got matt wise..got rid of mota and glavine(whom most fans wanted out of ny)and since he got johan..its tommy who?

omar has about 20 relievers in camp...including.. * Joe Smith
* Matt Wise - from brewers
* Juan Padilla - recover from injury
* Jorge Sosa - in pen
* Tony Armas Jr.
* Willie Collazo - good lefty specialist
* Ricardo Rincon
* Nelson Figueroa- won carribean world series mvp
* Brian Stokes - got for cash from rays
* Jason Vargas
* Steven Register - rule 5 draft
* Ruddy Lugo
* Nate Field
* Andy Cavazos

whom are all fighting for the last 2-3 spots in the bullpen....

not to mention duaner sanchez in the pen

and the only thing on his radar is getting oliver perez to sign a long term deal...as his agent scott "screw-up" boras will try and get more than he can chew on...but we still have him this year under arbitration...

so ive made my case for omar..lots of paperwork done this offseason...

now lets see what cashman has done...if i missed anything let me know...

reisgned arod,mariano,posada..picked up option on abreu,"pettite".
made deal with pavano...
trade for albadejo(nats)
sign cano 4 years +
fire torre
sign girardi
hank takes over
sign hawkins let go of vizcaino

im srry i cant think of anything else..

oh yeh shelly and his blood clot...
sign morgan ensberg

who wins???

abie said...

oh and i left out signing endy 2yr deal

SploggerDon said...

hey yankee fans (includes you sam i am) your welcome to join the wagon! it might your only chance before people start calling you a winner picker

SAM I AM said...

HAHAHAHAHHAHA you make me laugh

SploggerDon said...

yea im sure i do, cause in about 6 months im also gonna make you cry

SAM I AM said...

the only crying im going to be doing is crying from laughter. that after the mets gets the best pitcher in baseball they still manage a way not to win. it never gets old i tell you.

SploggerDon said...

put your money where your mouth is! i say mets go farther than the yanks

abie said...

i bet oliver perez gets more wins than cole hamels....

SploggerDon said...

is sam i am quiet?

SAM I AM said...

the only reason why im silent. is because im miffed at the newly acquired arogance that mets fans always seem to have at the begining of every season. you guys never learn

SploggerDon said...

so shut me up!

SAM I AM said...

the power of shuting up mets fans is an art I never mastered yet. But it seems pointless to learn how because The Mets on the feild do a good job at shutting up their fans

MSR said...

Mets fans get overhyped...
The Mets start slumping on the field...
Mets fans go into denial...
Pretty soon, No one's talking about the Mets anymore.

SploggerDon said...

sammy i dont know why words are coming out of your mouth? the next thing that should come out of your fingers typing is a number, ANY amount in the world u can think of! but it should be a number, and definatly not a "wow",

exampkle:
