according to Madden, the Yanks walked away from a 4-for-1 deal that would have netted them Santana: Phil Hughes, Melky Cabrera, Jeff Marquez and Mitch Hilligoss to the Twins for the lefty. But it wasn’t the talent on which the Yanks were overly concerned. While Cashman was loathe to trade Hughes, the GM was more concerned with the money.
The Yankees concerned with money? What’s this world coming to? Well, here’s Madden’s take:
Once Andy Pettitte announced he was returning to the fold for $16 million, it meant the Yankees had committed $408.4 million this winter to retain six players. The acquisition of Santana would have meant tacking on another $125 million to that figure, and Cashman, who never wanted to do the Santana deal in the first place, blanched at the prospect of adding another $20 million to a payroll that was already on the cusp of $200 million, again. In this respect, the timing of Pettitte’s decision to return - while initially seen as giving the Yankees additional leverage in their dealings with the Twins on Santana - actually gave Cashman the “out” he needed…
Bad as it was to be sacrificing Hughes, Cashman told the Yankee high command, look at what the payroll was going to be now if they added $20 million-$21 million for Santana on top of the $16 million they just tacked on with Pettitte…In the end, Cashman prevailed, convincing Hank and Hal Steinbrenner of something he could never have done with their dad - that trading for Johan Santana was simply too expensive for the New York Yankees.

This is My take on the subject
Is cash crazy??? if the players stated were in fact true, why the hell didn't cash pull the trigger. melky is mediocre at best (offensively) Hughes has a high ceiling but you just never know with guys like him (he already had an injury plagued first season. and those other 2 guys are just some pretty decent prospects(i think)and your getting in return the bast damn lefty period. I don't want to here that all of the sudden hes money conscience after getting ripped off on the arod deal and over paying for just about everybody he ever to sign in his tenure as GM. this just makes no sense at all on so many levels. F*$k Brian cashman (I'm sorry to be so harsh but that's the way I feel)

sam i agree with you totally. They could have gotten Arod for cheaper after he came crawling back to them. but all of the yankee fans said who cares bec its not our money. but now if your not getting johan bec of money and he ends up on the sox who win 3 years in a row. Then you can look at the bad contracts they are still paying like Pavano and giambi.
Plus i hate to say this bec i do love pettite but if his 16 mill is stopping them from getting johan then getting him is a bad deal, bec i would rather johan then pettite especially bec if the yanks have johan obviasly means the sox dont have him.
i know that the sox would get another frontline starter but none of them are a johan.
Ps. the mets really look terrible now after cabrera was traded they got nothing they could do anymore.
I have a couple of things to say to this.
1) sam chill out. if it in fact was offered then we can always go back and say ok we'll take it. yaani saying that its still gonna be on the table because if they would accept it once they will still accept that a week later.
2) boston seems to be cooling off and it looks somewhat possible that he can go back to minny next year.
3)IN WHICH CASE...he will be a free agent next year along with bedard (because the oriels are to retarded and wont trade him). Next year about $50 million a yeear will be coming off the books in the form of Giambi's backloadaed contract, Moose's 13+ million salary, and Abreu's $16 million.
THAT WILL GIVE CASH ALL THE CASH THAT CASH CAN ASK FOR! this will garuantee us one of the best pitchers in the game without giving up my boyyy hughes
very good point sam....new reports surfacing that the twins are now talking to other teams including the mets about johan....
reports say that omar is willing to deal his prospects but....he will not include mulvey and pelfrey in the same deal or gomez and fernando marinez...so the deal looks like this mulvey/pelfrey and gomez/martinez and humber and throw in gotay and a catcher who cares just get him!!! GET RID OF SCHNEIDER!!! RANGERS IN 7!!! and finally our division gets a lil weaker with the departure of willis and cabrera...
ps max sutton the mets made the marlins an offer for cabrera of gomez pelfery etc... and they said that they would not trade in division
max s do u have anymore belly dancer friends?
ed coleman is reporting that if the mets can find a replacement for heilman in the bullpen (or if duaner or paddila can succed in spring training) then aaron heilman will be moved to the starting rotation..
all i can say is that its about time...and this is a good move becuz now he is happy with the mets and they can try and sign him long term...
yes finaly, heilman was supposed to be in the rotation for the past 2 years. Its not like he was a joba out of the pen anyway. he always blew the big imporntant games. i am sure he will be more comfortable and happy which will make him a better pitcher as a starter.
Abie, max n made me promise i keep all of the dancers for him so you got to talk to him about that. he is a selfish hog when it comes to the ladies.
And knowing that the mets tried to get cabrera is a little comforting but unfortunatley doesnt help the team.
GM's around the league are speculating that the Metropolitans are in big trouble!!!
hey have some pretty big holes to fill: Starting Pitching, Middle Relief pitching, they now have 3 catchers of which none are everyday solid MLB catchers.
They have no minor league ready players to be promoted to the bigs next year.
They have no minor league prospects that anyone is interested in. Yes Abe, you did mention a couple of good prospects but they are not good enough compared to what other clubs are offering up in some of these trades.
The Mets are simply at the mercy of the market. Omar was supposed to be awesome at building up the minor league system just like in Montreal. What's the deal, yo??? It seams like he has gotten NY money to his head and he's taking advantage of his more flexible budget but he's forgotten about the farm system.
Omar has made some good expensive signings in Beltran and Wagner, and trading for Delgado. He did good with signing Reyes and Wright long term.
He has done well with getting some under-valued players in Maine, Perez, Castillo, Alou...but I don't know what he is gonna do for the pitching staff this year when he doesn't have much to give up.
Livan Hernandez is the only name i'm hearing.
I also heard he wants A.J. Burnett from Toronto...but Toronto is not looking to trade him until they finish shopping Alex Rios to bring in another big young top pitcher.
Let me hear it Met fans....
Check out Detroit's Team for next season:
SP: Verlander, Bonderman, Robertson, Rogers, Willis
RP: T. Jones, Rodney, Grilli, Seay, Bydak, Zumaya
C: Pudge
1B: Carlos Guillen
2B: Placido Polanco
SS: Edgar Renteria
3B: Miguel Cabrera
LF: Jacque Jones
CF: Curtis Granderson
RF: Maggs Ordonez
DH: Sheff
Fantasy Baseball team???
Taking a look at the 6 prospects going back to Florida for cabrera and willis...THEY ARE REALLY GOOD.
The weakest player is the Rabelo, who was the backup to pudge last season. he's 28 years old and is not known for his hitting, but does throw out more base runners than pudge does now.
Andrew Miller will probably start the season in the Marlin's rotation. He was awesome in college, the minors and was rushed to the majors last year and was mediocre. He's supposed to be really really good. He was originally the #6 pick in the 2006 draft and that was only because he was holding out for a huge bonus. I think he is a Boras client.
Looks like a good deal for both teams.
Mike the only thing i can say about the mets is they got better by the marlins getting worse. hopefully for this year that cabrera willis deal gave the mets a few more wins.
Being an optomistic fan i have to say that the bull pen cant be any worse than it was this past season.
2. Having Heilman in the rotation should i am hoping fills what glavine gave the team.
The hitting should be fine. If they stay healthy for the NL its a great offense.
So 1.Maine 2,Perez 3.Heilman.4Pedro 5.pelfrey 6.elduque and hopefully omar can come up with something.
i say 6 or7 starters bec of the health of elduque and pedro. so if you have enough ok starters you can get by the year.i feel that they should give ELDUQUE the 8th inning role any way.
So with a weak division a very good offense, an ok starting staff and a very questionable bullpen i still think they have a good shot at the playoffs.
The reason i was so bitter was after such a collapse as a fan you hoped they would make a splash in the offseason. Its never good to have a collapse but if they were going to collapse like that they should have did it this coming year with all the free agents coming up. Although they Should have gotten Arod.
since the nl is so weak i was trying to think of the nl all star team vs the red sox or tigers..
here i go
c: brian mccan/russel martin
1b: pujols/howard/fielder
2b:utley
3b:wright/braun
ss: hanley/reyes
of:beltran
of:soriano/carlos lee
of:holiday
compare that to the tigers or red sox and we still lose...oh well
max s just remember even though all the teams in the al are better then the nl we still get 1 shot at them in the world series.... we only have to be the best in our league and the only good team other then the mets in the nl is the phillies...and dont worry that they are in our division becuz bud selig created the wild card
the mets still have the best lineup in the nl...dont forget that....and perez and maine arent manure...so relax still got pedro and pelfrey can become something....so relax...if we get an ace that would help our chances in the w.s. but we still cabn win in the nl (or JV)...
reyes 300/15/85
castillo 290/7/76
wright 330/33/118
beltran 283/28/106
alou 331/21/91
delgado 272/32/98
castro/schneider/estrada 263/20/62
church 275/17/73
wats wrong with that..the big question is always health...and if delgado wakes up and alou doesnt get hurt then y not...take a deep breath...exhale and relax becuz the season doenst start for another 4 months...that 122 days and 71 days to spring training
THIS LINK IS A TO A GUY WHO CREATED A FAKE REPORT AND IT LOOKS JUST LIKE THE REAL MLB.COM...CHECK IT OUT BECUZ IT LOOKS SO REAL THAT THE METS GOT SCOTT KAZMIR!!!

I just got this from a trusted source.. Mets fans would you be happy??
Santana/Reyes/Haren Blockbuster In The Works?
Just got an incredible rumor from a trusted New York sportswriter. Stay with me, because this one's crazy. But rest assured that if the source wasn't good, I wouldn't post it.
Minnesota has initiated talks for a three-way blockbuster with the Twins and A's. Here's how it would go down:
Mets send Jose Reyes, Kevin Mulvey, and Hector Pellot to A's
A's send Bobby Crosby and Dan Johnson to Mets
A's send Dan Haren to Twins
Twins send Johan Santana to Mets
Mets get Johan Santana, Bobby Crosby and Dan Johnson
A's get Jose Reyes and Kevin Mulvey
Twins get Dan Haren and Hector Pellot
The source says Haren is exactly the type of player the Twins want for Santana, a cheap frontline starter. It's known the Mets would hate to deal Reyes but they would get some value beyond Santana. Billy Beane is happy because he gets Reyes for one more year than he had Haren plus longtime favorite Mulvey. And, he's out of Crosby's
yawn...another rumor...im going to sleep...my thoughts so far on this offseason..is that there is too many rumor websites and too many people getting themselves in over their head and its getting ridiculous...i feel like its march already...as much as i love hearing rumors and such its getting out of hand...i'm at a point where i'm just going to wait for a deal to be done...becuz frankly i dont mind the mets staying with the guys they have..
ps.. sam that was a nice quick entrance and exit at the wedding last night...one for the record books!
if u like rumors...
Speaking with WFAN, beat reporter Sweeny Murti said…
“Omar Minaya said he inquired about Dontrelle Willis, but the Marlins were not going to deal him within the division.
“However, the Tigers have explored the idea of spinning him off, and they have contacted the Mets. There wasn’t an official offer presented to Omar, but what was talked about, from what I was told, they talked about spinning off Willis. In addition, though, the Mets would have to take on some salary. The Tigers are interested, perhaps, in moving Willis and Ivan Rodriguez and dumping his salary, which is $13 million next season. So, if the Mets wanted Willis from Detroit, that have to take on that salary. The thing is, he has a no trade clause, so to get him to waive it you’d probably have to give him another year.”
fist wright gets on the cover of a video game and now reyes does...i hope it doent get to his head and he becomes a big shot now..
heres the game

I'm glad you recognized my unbelievable 8 second appearance. I even got a beracha. They just submitted to guiness and im up for like 3 awards.
by the way, now that they have trade Dontrelle Willis and Miguel Cabrera to the Tigers, the Marlins are set up to have a player payroll of around $10 million, for every one…
the marlins won in 97' then ripped the team apart then won in 03' and now have completely ripped the team apart so they are due to win again in 09'
johan will stay a twin
max n just went on a trip with the belly dancer to the mountains
