Were the yankees sleeping?

Phillies acquire Lidge in five-player trade
Phillies acquire RHP Brad Lidge and infielder Eric Bruntlett from the Astros for outfielder Michael Bourn, RHP Geoff Geary and third baseman Mike Costanzo.
We're not at all impressed with Ed Wade's first move as Houston's GM. Bourn could have a long career as a fair regular, but he's basically another Willy Taveras for the Astros. If Lidge's arrival in Philadelphia results in Brett Myers' return to the rotation, this could be a big winner for Pat Gillick. Geary is an average middle reliever and Costanzo's a long shot to have a career, so this basically boils down to Lidge for Bourn. Lidge is only under control for one more year, so it's not a huge slam dunk. Still, turning Myers back into a starter gives the Phillies a bigger rotation upgrade than they possibly could have picked up in free agency. Nov. 7 - 10:56 pm et

If Brad lidge was available for a deal that involved a 4th OF a middle of the line reliever and and a marginal prospect. Why the hell didnt the yankees make a push for him? This is an area where they need to improve and lidge would have turned the yankee bulpen to a dominant one.

I'll tell you one thing At least the mets get screwed.

Those Mets fans and their overrated players and big egos...

This is a rediculous trade by the Astros. It sounds like the GM was under some pressure to make a move, any move. Maybe someone was fed up with Lidge because of the heartbreakers he has caused that franchise over the past 3 years.
This is similar to the trade the Mets made that included Oliver Perez. The Pirates gave up on Perez even though he had a strong arm and was dominant once upon a time. Just because the management and coaches couldn't figure out how to extract that greatness from within, they gave up on him and traded him for your average ballplayer in Nady. We witnessed only a sample of his dominance this past season. He's still a work in progress, lucky he's young.
Lidge has a power arm and was dominant, once upon a time. Just because the Astros can't figure him out, they gave up on him for average ballplayers. Kuddos to Philly for pulling this off the way they did.

I have no idea why the Yanks didn't make this happen. I wish I knew what they put on the table for him.

i cant wait for this season to start and see if a) the mets an rebound from the devastating end of their 07 season and b) can the yankees make the playoffs (or win the w.s.) with girardi and w/o arod and with 3 rookie pitchers

Abie,
Please tell me you were joking when you were comparing john maine and oliver perez to Hamels and Myers.

on Lidge: I agree the Astros got close to nothing for him but he scares the hell out of me. He's a major headcase and not a guy you trust in the 7th inning og a tight postseason game.

im tired of people overrating brett myers he is not as great as everybody thinks he is....

his rep since his career began is that when he gives up a hit or two he loses his composure and gives up 4 or 5 runs in an inning...

the only reason that he was successful this year is that he was in the bullpen so he let it all out in one inning...

ill eat my words if he has a great year this year....but im predicting that lidge will not work out and that myers will be closing games out before the year is over....mark it down....and you can remind me of this in september..

oh and dont tell me that the mets have overrated players and big egos just look in ur own locker room

please dont go there

and its funny how avi says that the yankees spend tons of money and kouzmanoff isnt an option...and max n says that this is the new yankees...please pick one and lets move on yankee fans....

I personally don't have a problem with Kouz at third base, as long as he's not THE bat we get this offseason. Kouz will hit 20-25 homers and is adequate at third....
I just wont sacrifice good young pitching for the 5-6 more homers he'll give me over Betimit...
In fact I'd rather get him than Crede.
And Please let me clear up this fact once and for all---Avi D-- The yanks are not getting Miguel Cabrera for free! Keep dreaming! the marlins are going to START asking for Kennedy and Melky- The'll probably want tobata as well. I would do that in a heartbeat... but what if they want Hughes instead of Kennedy?tough call...
with Carl Crawford, Vlad, Lackey, Peavy, Santana, Oliver, Nathan, Manny, K-rod, C.C., Sheets, Chipper and Teixera all free agents next year, Why don't we keep all our young guys and make our splashes next year?
